THE MURAL

In conjunction with the major curriculum / performance /  African well initiatives of The Water Project, we will create a large outdoor water mural at our school.

Internationally accomplished muralists Xochitl and Nelson (aka Dedos) Garcia have agreed to be artists-in-residence for this project.  They will produce a design using visual imagery generated by all of our Queen Vic kids.  Under the direction of the artists, teams of staff and volunteer parents will work with kids to complete the painting.

The public face of the mural will be on the south facing wall, just east of the parking lot.  From there, the mural will wrap around the corner into the under cover area.  We will create a water environment there that will include painted surfaces on 3 walls, the blacktop and the ceiling.  The hopscotch and squareball courts will be incorporated into the design.

The artists have already secured funds for the paint from the City of Vancouver’s anti- graffiti fund.  We have begun to research grant sources to help provide some compensation for the artists.  Because projects of the magnitude often require more lead time to secure funding, we are thinking it may work well to consider doing this in two phases.
